Capture the Phish Hackathon | Stark State Cybersecurity Challenge

The Capture the Phish hackathon will merge the core capabilities of the software engineering and cybersecurity disciplines. Cybersecurity is about identifying problems in software, and software engineering is about using technology to solve those problems.

This event will bring together the best of both worlds, combining a hackathon (software dev) and “Capture-the-Flag” (CTF) event (cybersecurity).

Teams of 2-4 students will be given a sandbox that has a list of raw emails. Some will be normal emails and some will be malicious. The CTF exercise is to identify which emails are phishing emails.

What to know:

  1. The hackathon will be hosted on https://tryhackme.com and will require teams to capture 6 flags that include risks.
  2. Your team will create rules for blocking these emails.
  3. Your team will create a tool to detect the risks in the phishing emails.
  4. Your team will create a 5-minute presentation about your CTF and hackathon results.

Prizes include the Oculus Meta Quest 2 VR headset and the chance to interview for a paid, fully remote summer internship with cybersecurity startup, HacWare.
